What is Chiropractic?
By Dr. Bill Thesier, Virginia Beach, Va Chiropractor
As a newcomer to chiropractic and Thesier Chiropractic Clinic, you probably have some questions about what chiropractic is and how it works. Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts and is based on the premise that good health depends, in part, on a normally functioning nervous system. Chiropractic is not just about headaches, neck pain, lowback pain or whiplash but allowing the body, through spinal manipulation and various theraputic procedures, to regain its normal nerve function and physiology so a state of good health can exist.
The most delicate and important organs of the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) are encased in the hard bony coverings of the skull and spinal vertebrae. The spine provides protection, mobility, and weight bearing support for the upright posture. The spine offers protection for the delicate spinal cord and spinal nerves, which exit from between the bones or vertebrae of the spinal column. Irritation to these spinal nerves can occur when spinal biomechanics are compromised and not functioning properly.
Chiropractors understand the body has well designed natural "survival mechanisms" intended to maintain the body in a good state of health. Also known as "innate intellence" these mechanisms allow the body to respond to the "fight or flight" situations and deal with outside stressors which influence your predisposition to disease. Just think, do you have to tell the body to digest the food you eat? Do you have to tell your heart how many times to beat or your lungs to breath? Do you have to tell your body to heal and repair a cut finger? As you can see, your body has the ability to maintain proper function and keep you well, provided you are not compromised.
By correcting spinal dysfunctions, chiropractors help restore proper nerve and joint function, seeking to optimize the interaction between the spine and nervous system, thus improving your overall health.
Thesier Chiropractic Clinic is located in the heart of Virginia Beach, just off Interstate 264 at the Lynnhaven exit, and is convienent to the residents of Norfolk and Chesapeake as well.
